The Work Of A Trainer During ESL Speaking Activities

By Melissa Richardson

People from different parts of the world interact in various circumstances and sometimes language becomes a barrier to these interactions. This has encouraged people to take foreign language classes which employ different learning techniques. Use of ESL speaking activities is one of the techniques and requires the tutor to be in charge of the following responsibilities in the class.

It is the role of the tutor to make the preparations. This involves understanding the needs of his class and choosing the best topics that will be relevant to them. If each of the learners is asked to make a choice, there will be chaos as they may all have different opinions. The teacher should, however, consider their opinions too before making a decision so as to make them feel involved.

The session might not go as planned without people to control it. This will happen if the learners lose their focus and start discussing irrelevant things. If this happens, the main aim of the session will not be achieved and it will be a total waste of time. Someone has to be in control and the teacher will be in the best position to do so.

He will also be required to evaluate the session. It will be meaningless if the class performed an activity and everyone goes home without knowing if they made any progress or not. The teacher should give an analysis whereby he compares the goals they had set against their achievement. This will help in planning for the next learning program.

Since this is a class of learners, it is normal for them to make mistakes and correcting them will be a good way to perfect their skills. The teacher must hence not get mad at them but should instead correct them in a friendly manner. During each session, he should take notes on the mistakes committed and correct them on the same day so that they do not forget.

He will also be required to answer the questions asked by the learners at the end of the session. Students that are learning a new language are usually curious and they will have a lot of questions. You should not let them answer these questions among themselves as they may mislead each other. If there is something you are not sure of, conduct a research before giving an answer.

For the students to be motivated to do more, you have to encourage them too. Even if they do make mistakes, appreciate the effort they are already making. This will work best with young children that are learning the language. If you are dealing with adults, give them success stories of some people that started like them and are now fluent speakers.

It is advisable to make a follow-up on the progress of your learners. The session should not be the end of the goals you had set for that particular day. You should ensure that you keep on checking on them to know if they are keeping the rules. If they have already moved to other levels, find out how they are doing.
