With Their Youth Programs Matthews NC Tries To Make A Difference

By Joseph Hayes

Sadly, the days when communities worked together, played together, supported each other and cared for each other are long gone. In this modern society people seem to care for nothing and nobody but themselves. There are exceptions, of course. Everyone seems to be busy all the time, with no time left to spend on others. More people suffer from depression, loneliness and rejection than ever before. Thankfully, with their many youth programs Matthews NC organizations are trying to help as much as they can.

Families have also changed over the years. In so many cases, families do not spend time with each other any longer. Everyone is busy and young people are all too often left to their own devices. They need attention, acceptance and guidance and if they do not get it from their families, they will look for it elsewhere, often at places and with people that should rather have been avoided.

The unemployment rate is steadily rising and it is especially young people that become despondent. Consequently, they drop out of school because they simply cannot see the point. This has resulted in large numbers of youngsters that have no skills or experience, making it highly unlikely that they will find employment. Some organizations therefore focus their efforts on providing skills training to young people and to help them find jobs.

Some charitable organizations focus on the fact that the primary need of most troubled young people is to receive counseling that will help them discover a sense of self worth, increase their confidence and restore their belief in themselves. It is not always easy to reach these young people since they are often mistrustful about the intentions of anyone trying to reach out to them.

The problem is compounded by the fact that the number of young people addicted to drugs and alcohol has shown an alarming increase. They use substances to make them feel better and to cope with the terrible reality of their day to day lives. There are organizations that offer rehabilitation but it is extremely difficult to convince young addicts to accept the help offered to them.

It is very difficult to convince troubled youngsters to join a program if they are living on the streets. They tend to drift from place to place and never get the full benefit of the program they initially joined. To solve this problem, some organizations have set up shelters where these young people can sleep and get a meal. Such places are ideal to reach out to troubled youngsters and to convince them to accept help.

Charities, churches and other organizations do excellent work in trying to help troubled young people. Sadly, they reach only a fraction of those that are in desperate need of help. There are simply not enough resources and this severely limits the extent of the work that can be done. As a result, more and younger people end up living a life of crime, addiction and violence.

Much more can be done to help young people in trouble. However, it will require the authorities and every individual to recognize the need and to do more to empower those organizations trying to help. Everyone can do something, even if it is just a small contribution.
