Steps On How To Teach ESL Beginners

By Donna Peterson

ESL is the abbreviation for English as a Second Language. As a result of how important the English Language is, many people consider taking it as a course in the university even though they may have been exposed to its rudiments in the secondary school. In countries where it is learned as a second language, the teachers try to discover more methods on how to teach ESL beginners so that their job can be well appreciated.

Since language is a means of communication, the teacher should know his students well and identify the areas where they frequently express themselves. This means that the content of ESL education for a student will not be exactly the same for a businessman or woman. Of course, the business person has to be helped in such a way that he can get more customers by reaching out to them.

Having a lesson note is necessary. This will help the teacher in knowing how to present his ideas without deviating or missing important points. The subject also looks easier and more appreciable when it is broken into modules and each piece is treated one at a time.

Try as much as possible to make the class interactive. Even when you know they are not yet perfect, encourage them to communicate in the language in class. Learning a language is more effective when it is used frequently. By hearing them speak, you can also comment on their phonetics.

You can encourage your students to have private study times by asking them to own a vocabulary notebook. You can tell them the benefits of doing this so that they will not feel coerced. Then tell them what you want in it. For instance, you can say you want them to have fifty new words in it every day from what they see in their dictionaries or novels you have asked them to buy. You will also make efforts to take a look at them at least once a week.

You can begin your class by talking to them about the different parts of speech. Since there are quite a number of them, you would also need to select the most important ones. For example, you can start teaching them about pronouns because a majority of the sentences made depend on this part of speech. Don't assume they know it, teach them the differences in the use of he, she, us, I and so on.

Also, give them the most important nouns. Nouns are vast and it is not possible to exhaust the list but when you understand your students, you will know the nouns to be taught at their level. Businessmen, for instance, should know what calculators, money, profit, loss and several other words mean, while a student should know the differences between a textbook, a notebook, a journal, a newspaper and more.

Since sentences cannot be made without verbs, they would need to know how to use verbs. Some verbs appear in everyday communication and such should be introduced first. Also, try not to give examples with some compound or complex sentences until they have learned how to make simple sentences.
