For ADHD Specialist Michigan Is Worth Visiting

By Gregory Lewis

ADHD is one of the medical disorders that affect the brain and behaviors of patients. It is important to understand that there is no cure for this condition even though people have several options that they can try out to manage symptoms. The treatment that is chosen to manage this condition is usually dependent on the severity and symptoms that the patient is experiencing. When in search of ADHD specialist Michigan should be given priority.

In order to pick the right treatment option, a person must take time to discuss it through with their doctor. The common treatment options are behavioral measures, various therapies, and medication. When the right measures are applied, managing this order is possible and patients can even be positively motivated about themselves. To increase chances of a patient responding better to it, it is recommended to start treatment early.

ADHD is caused by several different factors, but at the moment, researchers have not been able to identify them. There are beliefs among people that the condition is caused by factors such as playing too much video game, eating too much sugar, or bad parenting. However, that is not true. The condition is brain-based and is caused by biological disorder in the brain.

Children with this condition show physiological differences from those of normal children. These differences can be captured through brain imaging. Other studies reveal that kids diagnosed with this condition also happen to have a relative suffering from the same condition. A chance of this happening is up to four folds. Researches are still being conducted to determine the genes responsible for occurrence of this condition.

Medications used in treating this disorder can be categorized into non stimulant and stimulant medication. The doctor should be the one to decide which one medication to use after consulting the child since it could be difficult for parents to make this decision. It is the child that must decide whether they are okay with the choice of taking medication. If they decide to choose medication, parents have to decide whether it will be taken during school hours, weekends, or evenings.

Central nervous system stimulants are the ones that are prescribed the most for ADHD treatment. The mechanism through which this method works involves increasing the secretion of brain chemicals referred to as norepinephrine and dopamine. When these two chemicals are secreted in the body, the child is able to concentrate and focus better.

Some examples of stimulants that are used include amphetamine-based stimulants such as Adderall, dextrostat, and Dexedrine. Others include dextromethamphetamine such as desoxyn, dextromethylphenidate such as focalin, and methylphenidate such as daytrana, concerta, metadate, and Ritalin. These products can be purchased easily from a pharmacy or a drug store.

Non-stimulant medicines function by increasing the quantity of norepinephrine in the brain. Scientists believe this chemical helps with attention and memory. Antidepressants like nortriptyline and the substance atomoxetine are some of the examples. There are also medications which are not stimulants that can be used for this condition. Unfortunately, it is yet to be understood fully how they work. They include clonidine and guanfacine. Both non-stimulants and stimulants have side effects. The effects include trouble sleeping, dry mouth, irritability, nervousness, headaches, and weight loss.
